Interview with Moogle, Twink Cosplayer
1: Tell us about yourself?
Moogle: My husband got me into cosplaying 2 years ago and Twink was the very first costume I made all by myself. It seems I also have a knack for making plushies.
2: Where are you from?
Moogle: Texas
3: Growing up, what were some of your favorite animated programs or childhood heros?
Moogle: Punky Brewster, Scooby Doo, The Smurfs and Rainbow Brite and TMNT
4: Do you think your childhood influenced a lot of who you are today and the choices that you make?
Moogle: Yes, Punky gave me the power to be myself and ‘Dare to Be Different’ and both Punky and Rainbow Brite influenced the bright colors that I enjoy in my wardrobe and surroundings.
5: Did you grow up watching Rainbow Brite, the TV show, or were you impressed by the movie?
Moogle: I haven’t seen the movie. I watched the tv show and had the coloring books.
6: Do you have any Rainbow Brite Memorabilia from your childhood?
Moogle: My husband got me a Rainbow Brite Doll he found at a thrift store last year for my birthday. It was my favorite present and it shares our bed w/ us every night. ^_^
7: You created a Twink Costume. How did you go about designing a Twink costume?
Moogle: It was pretty basic, I drew it out first. I made a plushie mini-me to use as a 3D reference. Then found fabric I thought would be suitable. The costume itself was just a bag with holes for the head and arms. I edged the openings with ribbon so it wouldn’t be itchy. The hat was a large circle that I gathered and added elastic to. I made the stars out of christmas ornaments and a Halloween headband. The nose was a clown nose. The hardest part was the tights which I had to hand color using fabric markers. I had to draw the rings separating the colors while I was wearing the tights so that they would be even. Then I finished coloring them in by stretching the pantyhose over a thin piece of cardboard. Shoes were found at a thrift store.
8: Is it handmade? Or did you use store bought items, shoes, etc?
Moogle: see above
9: You put a lot of details into your costume, what is your favorite part?
Moogle: My plushie
10: What materials did you use to create your costume?
Moogle: again see above
11: Where did you wear this costume?
Moogle: To the Japanese water gardens and later to a Halloween party
12: Were you recognized?
Moogle: I was recognized at the party but at the water gardens I got asked if I was a Moogle. Not knowing what that was, I replied “I could be…” and the nickname stuck.
13: What is your favorite part of the costume?
Moogle: how comfortable it was to wear
14: What was the most difficult?
Moogle: the tights, hands down
15: How much would you say the costume cost in all?
Moogle: probably less than $25
16: Is it comfortable to wear?
Moogle: Very
17: Is it difficult to clean? near impossible bc the colors on the tights will bleed.
18: If you could make the costume again, what changes would you make?
Moogle: I’d see if there’s a easier way to make the tights, but seeing as there isn’t one to my knowledge the costume remains retired.
19: What is another character from Rainbow Brite you would consider dressing as?
Moogle: Rainbow Brite herself. I saw a really good one at A-fest 2009. Most of the ones you see these days are the so-called “sexy” version which to me just looks sleazy.
I thank you for taking the time to answer these questions, and have a Rainbow Day
